West Coast Vintage Racers were back for their first event of the 2005 season. Only instead of a race meet at the track it was an educational meeting on Fuel Injection. The seminar was held at Del McClure’s shop in Portland, Oregon. Dan Robinson of McClure Industries did a great job of providing an excellent space for the seminar. The bad news is that the day of the Seminar Portland suffered the worst ice storm it’s had in years. The good news is that even with the horrible road conditions 27 of the expected 65 participants still showed up. There were drag racing enthusiasts, road racing enthusiasts, Bonneville speed record enthusiasts, modern sprint car enthusiasts, engine builders and of course vintage racers in attendance.
27 people showed up even though it was the middle of an ice stormGreg Richardson, Vice President of Kinsler Fuel Injection, Inc. taught the seminar. Greg came all the way from their headquarters in Troy Michigan for the class. Kinsler Fuel Injection is the one of (if not the) leader in Fuel Injection technology. Greg started out his presentation by stressing the need to keep safety in mind when designing, installing and using fuel injection. He then gave us an overview of fuel injection and described the operation of the three basic types of fuel injection; mechanical, electronic and mechanical timed injection. Over the next six hours we covered the subjects of constant flow nozzles, different types of nozzles, nozzle identification, K-type jets, Mechanical fuel pumps, electric fuel pumps, sizing fuel pumps, main bypass valves, secondary bypass valves, adjusting secondary bypass valves, high speed bypass valves, restrictor jets, plumbing your fuel system, indexing a barrel valve and how to set up linkage. Everyone in attendance received a printed hand out prepared especially for the seminar by Kinsler that provided them with information on all that was discussed in writing. In addition they had examples of all the items discussed so we could all see and handle what we were talking about.

Overall it was a great group of really interesting people. At the end of the seminar Marvin Price, Vice President of West Coast Vintage Racers thanked everyone for coming and made a few announcements. Marvin was instrumental in organizing the seminar for WCVR and he told everyone about the future seminars and classes the WCVR will be offering in 2005, one seminar on chassis setup and two driving schools. He also mentioned that WCVR is having the 2005 season sponsored by Mac’s Radiator & Muffler. This is a first for WCVR and possibly for any vintage oval racing organization. Marvin closed the seminar by reminding everyone to be extra careful driving home in the ice storm. All in all it was a very successful seminar despite the weather.
